It's the little touches that make a home

Annnnnndd we're back! We pretty much stopped using this thing because, well, life got in the way. We were recently nudged by Zach to pick this back up. We just hadn't had much going on project wise and this one is kind of small, but I'm really liking it in the kitchen. The other issue is finding the time between carrying for baby boy Logan, entertaining Hercules, and of course working from home. We both hated our kitchen caddy and knew it was time for a new one.

We searched and searched the stores we have here, always checking for pre-made kitchen caddies/utensil holders, but weren't able to find anything we liked. So I decided to turn to Pinterest for help. I just looked up DYI Kitchen Caddies and found a lot of different options, so I took ideas from those and made it my own.

We've had the same kitchen caddy since we graduated high school and moved in together. We bought it from Wal-mart for something like $10, including utensils. So we were very overdue for a new one.

Look how old this thing is!
The caddies I found on Pinterest were all re-using household items, like soup cans, candle jars, etc. I originally planned to use soup cans, but realized we just had too many utensils that it would take too many for our needs. So after looking around, I realized Logan's formula cans were perfect (which also added to the length of time to do this, we had to wait until he'd gone through enough formula cans!) and started to save them. For our smaller utensils, I added on a soup can. Then came the fun part of getting to chose the colors and begin the painting. Here's a before picture:

A soup can & formula can. Notice Logan napping on the monitor :)
I decided to go with red, orange, and white. As seen in the blog about the chalkboard mirror, we have a painting of a rose in the kitchen and that's where I pulled the color inspiration from. Here's the first and second coats of the cans:

I only needed to do two coats, when I originally thought it would take three. Once I finished the painting and let it dry, I needed to arrange the cans and then decide how to hold them together. I wasn't really sure how I wanted to do that and after not finding anything in our stores, I just used black ribbon I had bought for another project. Black fits because we have a bit of black in the kitchen with our fridge and other appliances.

Then came the final step of adding utensils and I was done!

Thank for reading! Hopefully we can post a few more things up here soon.
